Kickboxing

Kickboxing classes at Ronin Athletics NYC revolve around a hybrid blend of stand-up training that incorporates the modern concepts of Western Boxing, Muay Thai and Dutch Style Kickboxing.

Boxing – This martial art, familiar to most of the world as the ‘Sweet Science,’ incorporates the 4 basic punches - the Jab, Cross, Hook and Uppercut - thrown in rapid succession. Our kickboxing classes use Western Boxing's strategic fighting styles and mold them to fit the strikers' preferred approach.

Muay Thai
– Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and known as ‘The Art of Eight Limbs’ because it utilizes eight points of contact to strike an opponent. Specifically, the eight points are the fighter's Hands, Elbows, Knees and Shins.
Dutch Style Kickboxing – The most modern of the three striking disciplines, Dutch Style Kickboxing was developed in the 1970’s as a hybrid of Boxing, Muay Thai, and Kyokushinkai Karate.  It’s a unique approach to fighting that combines angular movement, timing, and combinations utilizing the striking tools of Boxing, Muay Thai, and Karate.

The strategy and tactics of these striking disciplines contribute to the Stand-up component of Ronin's MMA training.
Typical Kickboxing 101 class structure focuses on basic tool development, combinations, defense, and counters — trained through pad-work and partnered glove drills, often isolating a particular offensive / defense technique for that particular class. The Kickboxing 101 class also features physical conditioning and calisthenics throughout the session as a warm up and cool down, as well as during pad-work intervals.

The Kickboxing 201 version of this class is for those who have already developed a solid base of techniques and attributes and are looking to take the next step into a more contact-oriented class setting. Kickboxing 201 is meant to serve as an introduction to sparring through added focus on isolation drills and the training of offensive / defensive movement, tactics and strategies (as opposed to technique / tool development) suitable for a competition environment.

For those looking for kickboxing classes in NYC, our Kickboxing 101 classes are a great place to introduce yourself to the sport. We currently offer three Kickboxing 101 New York classes per week. Schedule a free class at our Midtown NYC location and get started today!
