All students are encouraged to help each other, work together, share techniques and experiment to ultimately express their own unique and individual style. We feel that not only does this set us apart as a group but that it also greatly improves the learning curve and talent potential for everybody in the gym.
Individual Class Descriptions
FUNDAMENTALS
This class operates off of a rotating curriculum (approx. 8 to 10 weeks) specifically designed to introduce new students to our MMA/BJJ program. The goal is to build a strong foundation in all 3 ranges of fighting: Stand up, Clinch, and Ground, so that a new student may feel comfortable and acquainted with the techniques and training methodologies that he/she will encounter in our regular classes. (Kickboxing, No-Gi and Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Mixed Martial Arts).
There is also an emphasis on developing the proper rapport while drilling and training with a partner, specifically, how to help and work with one another, using progressive resistance to ensure a challenging and beneficial training session for both parties.
BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU/SUBMISSION GRAPPLING
Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training incorporates both:
No-Gi (shirt/rashguard and boardshorts) & Gi (traditional uniform) classes.
Gi and No-Gi are two sides of the same coin. While they are indeed two distinct sports with distinct characteristics based on attire, they both stem from the same Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu delivery system and share the same positional strategies, featuring control and submissions through mastery of leverage, pressure, mobility, and timing. While personal preference is always honored here, we encourage exploration into both sports as we feel it will give you an overall better appreciation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as an art. Each sport is usually characterized by a different pace and arsenal unique unto itself. Training both these aspects of grappling will only add to your development as a complete BJJ Athlete.
KICKBOXING
Kickboxing classes at Ronin Athletics revolve around a hybrid blend of stand-up training that includes Western Boxing, Muay Thai, and MMA.
Typical 101 class structure focuses on basic tool development, combinations, defense & counters—trained through pad-work & partnered glove drills, often isolating a particular offensive/defense techniques for that particular class. The 101 class also features physical conditioning & calisthenics throughout the session as warm up, cool down, and during pad-work intervals.
The 201 version of this class is for those who have already developed a solid base of techniques and attributes and are looking to take the next step into a more contact-oriented class setting. Kickboxing 201 is meant to serve as an introduction to sparring, through more focus on isolation drills and the training of offensive/defensive tactics and strategies (as opposed to technique/tool development) suitable for a competition environment.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
Mixed Martial Arts training at Ronin Athletics revolves around two particular ranges and scenarios:
- Clinch—offense/defense. Learning to use, as well as defend against takedowns and strikes in MMA. (from outside range & against the wall)
- Ground—grappling training with modified strategies that the element of striking brings unto the BJJ ground game.
The majority of this class involves “Isolation sparring” rounds which are a mixture of stand up/clinch/ground. As such, it’s recommended that a solid base in the fundamentals of those ranges be developed (through Fundamentals/Kickboxing/Submission Grappling classes) to be able to fully benefit and safely participate in this class.
