As always Team Ronin Athletics made a great showing at this small, but well-run tournament in Williamstown, NJ. However, even more impressive this time around was that it was only a very small team (4 guys) making the trip down to compete.

here are the quick results:

Matt Weber - first place Gi White belt Welterweight
Matt Weber - second place No-Gi Intermediate Welterweight
Chris Dolan - second place No-Gi Intermediate Flyweight
Christian Montes - third place Gi Purple Belt Welterweight
Christian Montes - third place No-Gi Advanced Welterweight

Jon Maresco - also competed in Gi White Belt Middleweight, where he had 5 matches going 3-2 for the day, however since it was a huge division, even with 3 consecutive and hard-fought wins, he did not end up medaling this time around.

Christian Montes

While our good friend, Christian Graugart, of the Copenhagen Sports Academy was in town last week, he shot some tutorials and rolling footage for his blog (ShogunHQ) and asked RONIN ATHLETICS head coach, Christian Montes, to contribute something.

Christian decided to show one of his favorite top game sequences in his first-ever video tutorial.

Christian Graugart and Gunnar Nelson visit Ronin Athletics

By webmaster | On 2008.11.22 @ 3:55 pm | In News | Comments Off |

The vikings had landed… Not only have these past few months been jam-packed with multiple competitions, multiple promotions, and consistently great training, RONIN ATHLETICS recently had some great friends from abroad visit as well.

On his annual trip to escape the Danish winter, our great friend, Christian Graugart of Copenhagen’s Combat Sports Academy, made a week-long stop in NYC after a much needed holiday in Cancun, Jamaica, and Cuba. And while one visiting viking is always an exciting thing in itself, this month… one was not enough.

Also in town, tearing up the NAGA Championships, was Icelandic MMA & BJJ prodigy, SBGi brown belt, Gunnar Nelson. Gunnar stopped by the gym after recently winning the NAGC silver in gi and gold in no-gi, defeating Brazilian veteran Jorge “Macaco” Patino in the finals.

Other than just having a great time hanging out and catching up with these athletes, a large amount of great training, pics, and video resulted. Definitely check out Graugart’s blog at ShogunHQ for detailed write-ups, multiple instructional video shorts, and photographs from the visit.

NAGA Midwest, Chicago 2008 -

By webmaster | On 2008.11.16 @ 9:19 pm | In Competition, Fight, News | Comments Off |

Huge congrats to the RONIN ATHLETICS’s very own head coach, Christian Montes, on his recent trip and competition wins at NAGA Midwest 2008!

Flying into Chicago on a delayed flight from NYC the morning of the competition, Christian quickly jumped into his rental car and drove straight to the event where he signed up, weighed-in, and jumped onto the mats to bring home a 3rd place medal in the Master’s Expert No-gi Middleweight division.

Christian Montes - Master’s Expert No-gi Middleweight

Since this was a “solo mission” for Christian, and he was running behind schedule, he was not able to have someone video record his matches, fortunately for us, one of his opponent’s did put up his second match of the same division (Men’s Master’s Expert Welterweight) with Christian up on youtube. Enjoy!

Stay tuned for more information and pics from the event!

Congrats Coach!!!
